We now offer four products to grow and harvest your own fresh salad every day.
We take orders for Grow Fresh Salad only from February 1 until October 31.
Growing Mix sold by the gallon
Delivery by our trucks in much of the Mid-Atlantic region is included. For those outside our truck routes, please email us to discuss delivery costs for your new salad garden. Thank you!
Starter plants sold by the plant
We plant the seed and grow the plant so it's ready to takeoff and produce luscious salad greens. Within a week or two you can start cutting the outer leaves to make a daily salad from your new garden. The plants will produce greens for your salad for months. All you add is water and keep cutting leaves.
Organic plant food sold by the 24 fl oz tub
at least 8 gallons of mix. Best size is about 10 gallons (around 15" in diameter and 15" tall or larger, as that size will hold moisture better and offer more room for root growth.
Second, you buy your starter plants from us. We offer salad plants that are guaranteed to grow quickly, so you can start cutting leaves very soon and making your salads.
Third, you buy some organic plant food from us, to apply to the container mix after mixing with water, usually every 2-3 weeks, once the garden is growing.
Fourth, if needed you can buy come containers from us to hold you new grow mix and plants.
Then you just watch your garden grow (watering it as necessary) and start harvesting your salad greens. We recommend cutting the outer leaves of the plants, and let the inner leaves continue to grow. That allows a regular harvest of salad greens and keeps the plant producing for months. And the greens are the perfect size -- not too small or too large. We can harvest tasty leaves from plants of Swiss Chard from March until December. That's a good return from a $1 investment in that plant. It's hard to keep lettuce growing through the heat of summer, so you might cut leaves until early July, then replant in August. Chard seems to love all weather.
How to get started: if your garden is in the Mid-Atlantic, esp in central MD, northern VA, DC, DE, or eastern PA, we might be able to deliver your garden products and setup your salad garden for you. Otherwise, we can ship our products to you.
A good rule of thumb for starting a salad garden is to have about 10 containers, each holding 6 plants, so you'll need 100 gallons of container mix and 60 plants. That's the minimum size for us to deliver and setup, but you can order whatever you want.
We have some basic containers for sale, but any large container will work as long as it has drain holes in the bottom.
If you have any questions, please send us an email on our Contact page.
Head's up on Delivery service: we can ship the plants and plant food by standard shipping at no extra cost to you, if the address is within the Mid-Atlantic region (see our note at bottom of this page). For the Growing Mix we recommend home delivery and setup by us (if you wish) of your new salad garden. The mix is light and drains well, but the mix is bulky and thus expensive to ship by a carrier, so we have to charge extra or deliver to you on our truck. Let us know by email if you have any questions. Thanks for your interest!
