Soup is one of the healthiest foods you can incorporate into a clean eating lifestyle. Why? Because not only is soup easy to make and store in bulk, it also has a high nutrient density. This means that you get more nutrients with less calories.
But just like salad, not all soups are created equally healthy. You’ll find a lot of sodium in store-bought soups, and even unnecessary additives like bleached white flour, MSG, and even sugary juices lurking in the ingredients. This will leave you with that feeling of being overly bloated, and may actually contribute to weight gain and other health issues over time.
The best way to avoid these nasty soup additives is to either make the soup from scratch yourself or buy from a brand with ingredients you trust. Soup is an affordable way to increase your overall health by adding more vegetables, protein, and essential nutrients into your diet.
Here at APM Food Works, all of our soups are homemade in Pennsylvania, using the best local ingredients from the Mid-Atlantic region. Each of our soups are gluten free and mostly dairy free, loaded with vegetables and plant protein WITHOUT all the added sodium and mysterious ingredients.
Here are 6 healthy soup recipes we recommend you try:
1. Roasted Tomato and Vegetable Soup
This soup is an easy year-round soup that may combine a combination of vegetable scraps with vegetable or chicken stock. This is an ideal meal for transitioning from winter to spring.
We make our roasted tomato and vegetable soup with winter squash, sweet potato, chickpeas, kale and onions mixed with our homemade vegetable stock. Our soup is all natural, gluten and dairy free, as well as vegetarian friendly.
This soup is good as is, but you might want to add some additional protein (see our chicken or seafood products) or additional carbs like our rice blend or heat up some of our cornbread.
2. Black Bean Chili
Chili is an easy go-to soup for the colder winter months, and a black bean chili is an excellent way to get a healthy serving of vegetables and legumes. Chili is perfect for football Sundays or cozy nights in with the family.
Our black bean chili is made with sweet peppers, corn, squash, black beans, and our nourishing black bean stock. Though we recommend chili for the winter months, it’s an easy and filling meal that can be served at any time of the year. This soup is also gluten and dairy free as vegetarian friendly.
3. Carrot Ginger Soup
Who knew that carrot and ginger would be such a delicious combination? Even for those of you who might not love ginger, the carrot base in this soup will mask the bold, tangy task of the ginger. Ginger is great for digestion while the carrot base is savory and light.
As a carrot ginger soup can be a little more difficult to make with ingredients around the house, we recommend you try our homemade ginger carrot soup made with miso, coconut oil, and garbanzo beans. This is a soup that is perfect for spring and summer, as it is a bit more lighter and less hearty. This soup is also gluten and dairy free and vegetarian friendly.
4. Thai Red Curry
Thai red curry is a multipurpose recipe, since you can use the curry as both a sauce with rice or vegetables, OR just as a soup by itself. This makes it an extremely versatile meal that is ideal for making in bulk and using for meal prep all week.
Our Thai red curry is made with our nutrient-dense seafood stock, packed with omega-3s and protein. We also incorporate coconut cream, shiitake mushrooms, and bok choy for a clean curry base you can trust. Though this soup is not vegetarian, it is gluten and dairy free. You can also pair it with our salmon or chicken.
Jambalaya is a hearty Cajun soup and rice dish that combines meat, rice, and vegetables. The combination of ingredients is literally a melting pot of different cultures, from France, Africa, and the Caribbean. Similar to curry, it’s typical served over rice but can also be served as a stand-alone soup.
Our jambalaya is all natural with shrimp, seafood and chicken stock and a tomato base. This all natural and gluten and dairy free soup is an easy, hearty meal that can be made in minutes.
6. Light Seafood Chowder
Last, but not least, seafood chowder is an excellent year-round healthy food option. Being based in the Maryland and Pennsylvania area, we are slightly biased, but this is one of our favorite go-to soup ideas.
Our seafood chowder soup is a combination of seafood stock, cod, salmon, and scallops with plenty of vegetables like celery, fennel and potatoes. Our cream base is combines coconut with local dairy cream, so it’s not quite as heavy as typical seafood chowder. However, with only 180 calories per serving and 19 grams of protein, it will be just as filling. This soup is all natural and gluten free.
